Foundations: Observation & Clarity

A series of portrait studies focused on developing a stronger understanding of realism through lighting, colour, proportion, and material response, using observational techniques to improve accuracy and visual clarity.

challenge

The challenge was to improve my understanding of how realism is constructed, particularly how proportion, lighting and colour work together to create believable images. Coming from a more technical background, I wanted to strengthen my foundational drawing skills and better understand how much information is required to convincingly represent form without overcomplicating the image.

solution

To address this, I created a series of portrait studies based on photographs of people I know, allowing for direct comparison and immediate feedback on accuracy. Using Photoshop with a simple round brush, I focused on building strong line work first, followed by controlled colour application through sampling and manual adjustment to better understand light, material and form.

Exploring the fundamentals of realism through observation, focusing on proportion, lighting, and colour to build believable portraits.

The portrait studies were approached as a way to better understand how realistic imagery is constructed from the ground up. Rather than focusing on stylistic interpretation, the work centred on observation, using photographic reference to study proportion, lighting behaviour and colour relationships.

Initial stages focused heavily on achieving accurate structure through line work, ensuring that proportions and placement were correct before introducing colour. From there, colour sampling was used as a foundation to understand base values, followed by manual refinement to explore how light interacts with different surfaces and materials.

The process highlighted the importance of simplicity and control, demonstrating that strong foundational decisions in structure and value can effectively carry realism without the need for excessive detail. Each study contributed to improving visual judgement, accuracy, and confidence in representing form.
